THRESHOLD is a collaborative design studio dedicated to creating experientially rich landscapes.

Located in downtown Fort Lauderdale Florida, the studio is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team with backgrounds in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and the fine arts.

Our design and construction experience includes a range of typologies, scales, and complexities that includes a collection of intimate gardens, boutique hotels and rooftop landscapes throughout coastal Florida. We aim to connect people with their surrounding landscape through thoughtful design gestures. Our process carefully considers history, context, ecology, and materiality to improve the quality of life for humans within the built environment.

We offer a professional relationship that is personable while centered around the vision and aspirations of our clients. Through a process of collaboration and devotion to craft, our practice embraces the inherent character of each site with clarity and integrity while seeking to build a distinguished body of work that is enduring over time.

Michael Callahan
Principal Landscape Architect

Michael is founder and creative director of Threshold Landscape Workshop. He has worked with Raymond Jungles on the design of Grove at Grand Bay with Bjarke Ingels and the 200m Master Plan renovation of Bal Harbour Shops. Michael has apprenticed for renowned landscape architect Stephen Stimson in Boston and began his career with the multidisciplinary firm Kimley-Horn and Associates.

Growing up along the Florida Coast, Michael developed an appreciation of his surrounding environment while exploring the beaches, tidal lagoons, and freshwater marshes near his home. These experiences combined with his early interest in art and architecture led him to study environmental design. Through time he has developed a passionate interest in how native plant communities, sustainable management practices and vernacular building materials work to create meaningful landscape experiences. Michael has participated as a visiting lecturer at Clemson University, Penn State University and Iowa State University.
